Marrakech with a City Guide: Secrets of the Red Pearl

1/2 day or 1 day

The Marrakech Medina (the historic part of the city), one of Morocco’s four Imperial Cities, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Marrakech is nicknamed the "Red City" due to the reddish-brown clay soil and sand used to build the walls and buildings of the old medina, which glow in all shades of red at sunset. Today, Marrakech is one of the most visited cities in Morocco and a top tourist destination, famous for its vibrant souks (markets), palaces, mosques, and stunning architecture. Explore this unique city with us and discover everything from its rich history to its dynamic present.

>> We will meet at the agreed location to begin our guided tour. Duration: basic version approx. 4 hours (Jemaa El Fnaa Square-Koutoubia Mosque-souk/market-Ben Youssef Madrasa-Bahia Palace) or full-day tour, see below. You can find the individual points of interest in the descriptions below. Would you like to change the itinerary or extend the tour? No problem, everything can be customized in advance to suit your wishes.

1. stop: Koutoubia Mosque
duration: 30 minutes

No visit to Marrakech is complete without a view of the Koutoubia Mosque. As the oldest and largest mosque in the city, it will captivate you with its austere elegance, which is typical of the Almohad dynasty style. The 12th-century minaret is a true masterpiece; its influence was so significant that it served as a direct inspiration for the famous towers in Seville and Rabat. Today, Koutoubia is not only a spiritual center but also a recognizable landmark that will safely guide you to the nearby Jemaa El Fnaa square.

2. stop: Jemaa El Fnaa
duration: 30 minutes

Jemaa El Fnaa is not just a square, it is the beating heart of Marrakech's medina, where time stands still. Since 2001, it has been rightly listed on the UNESCO list as a living masterpiece of human culture. With the arrival of dusk, the space transforms into a magical outdoor theater: the air is filled with the scent of grilled specialties and fresh citrus fruits, while the rhythmic drumming of Berber music provides a backdrop for snake charmers, storytellers of ancient tales, and henna artists.

3. stop: Semmarine Market
duration: 60 minutes

Entry to the Semmarine Market is a journey into a sensory paradise, where you are immediately immersed in the atmosphere of old Morocco. The air is thick and saturated with the scent of exotic spices. Your eyes are drawn to the vibrant colors of handmade textiles, the play of light through amazing lanterns, colorful ceramics, and masterfully crafted leather goods. Let yourself be carried away by the labyrinth of narrow streets, where you can (and should!) wander for hours. Remember that bargaining over prices is not only a necessity but also part of the local ritual.

4. stop: Ben Youssef Madrasa
duration: 60 minutes - does not include admission

Ben Youssef Madrasa: the pinnacle of Moroccan architecture. Enter the silence and beauty of the Ben Youssef Madrasa, once the most important Islamic university in the entire Maghreb. This architectural gem was built by Saadian Sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib in 1564-1565. Today, this historic landmark, named after the neighboring mosque, serves as a fascinating testament to the golden age of Moroccan construction. Its courtyard, decorated with fine plaster, zellij mosaics, and cedar wood, is considered the absolute pinnacle of Saadian aesthetics.

5. stop: Bahia Palace
duration: 60 minutes - does not include admission

Bahia Palace: an oasis of peace and mastery of Moroccan craftsmanship. Enter the world of 19th-century Moroccan aristocracy, where behind high walls lies the Bahia Palace ("Palace of Beauty" in translation). This vast complex, which covers almost 2 hectares, was begun by Grand Vizier Si Musa in the 1860s and completed by his son Si Ba Ahmed. Today, the palace is a peaceful historic landmark, attracting tourists with its beautifully decorated inner courtyards and traditional riad gardens, which represent the pinnacle of Islamic architecture and design. A walk through the rooms is a journey into an oriental fairy tale.

6. stop: Mellah
duration: 30 minutes

Mellah: fascinating history and scents of spices. The narrow streets of the Mellah quarter whisper stories of Jewish history in Marrakech. This quarter, once a closed home of the Jewish community, today attracts unique landmarks such as the Lazama Synagoguewith its iconic blue and white courtyard and museum exhibits, or the peaceful, white Miara Cemetery. Mellah is also a paradise for gourmets - while the Bab Mellah Market intoxicates you with the scent of fresh spices, the surrounding streets offer everything from authentic stalls with smoking tajine to luxurious restaurants and modern cafes in European style.

7. stop: Jardin Majorelle
duration: 60–90 min – the price does not include entrance fees (tickets must be purchased online in advance. We recommend starting your day with this tour or leaving it for the very end).

Jardin Majorelle: a masterpiece of colors and design. The Majorelle botanical garden represents a unique combination of orientalist art and landscape architecture. The garden, which Jacques Majorelle created from 1923, is home to rare plants from five continents. The architectural gem of the complex is the cubist villa from the 1930s, designed by Paul Sinoir. Since 1980, when the garden was saved and restored by Yves Saint Laurent, the place has become a global symbol of elegance and a must-visit destination for design lovers.

8. stop: Saadian Tombs
duration: 60 minutes - does not include admission

Saadian Tombs: a masterpiece of the Saadian era. The tombs are a historic royal necropolis located in the southern part of the Kasbah Mosque. This architectural complex, primarily dated to the reign of Ahmad al-Mansur (1578-1603), served as a burial site for members of the Saadian dynasty and later other Moroccan monarchs. The site is generally considered the pinnacle of Saadian art and architecture, thanks to its rich interior, intricate mosaics, and cedar ceilings. Today, it is a key historic landmark and a popular tourist destination in the city.

Essaouira: Where City Serenity Meets the Sound of the Ocean (from Marrakech)

1 day

Full-day trip to Essaouira: peace and beauty of the Atlantic.

In the morning we will leave the bustle of Marrakech and set out on a journey to the Atlantic coast, to the picturesque and peaceful fishing town of Essaouira. The journey itself is an experience: we will stop at viewpoints and drive through avenues of argan trees. With a bit of luck, you will see local rarities – goats climbing in the treetops (argan goats), which is a phenomenon to be seen only here in Morocco

Our journey continues with a visit to a traditional manufactory, where argan nuts are transformed into valued cosmetics. You will have a unique opportunity to attend a lecture about the entire production process, accompanied by the traditional singing of local women. Here you can buy 100% BIO argan oil, liquid "Moroccan gold", directly at the source.

After that, Essaouira will already welcome you, a city washed by the fresh Atlantic Ocean, which is a significantly more peaceful and poetic alternative compared to Marrakech. While walking through the local fish market, you will discover a vast amount of fresh catches that local fishermen bring in daily. Just choose, pay, and local "chefs" will prepare grilled fish and seafood for you in a moment, the freshness of which will amaze you.

Afterward, we will immerse ourselves in the beauty of the medina, where narrow streets hide handcrafted treasures. The city is incredibly photogenic, especially thanks to the characteristic blue color decorating the doors and shutters. You will have plenty of time to wander and explore every corner.

If you long for relaxation, the wide and spacious beach offers an escape from the city bustle. It is lined with stylish restaurants where you can enjoy excellent coffee or a refreshing drink.

Later in the afternoon, we will comfortably return to Marrakech and provide your transfer back to your accommodation.

Price includes: air-conditioned transport with pick-up and drop-off directly at your accommodation, a visit to an argan oil manufactory with an expert explanation, and the services of a multilingual guide speaking English, French, Spanish, or Arabic (Czech guide available upon individual arrangement).
